Doctors: No hamsters, exotics for kids

Hedgehogs can be dangerous for young children because their quills can penetrate skin and have been known to spread a bacteria germ that can cause fever, stomach pain and a rash, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics in a new report about dangers from exotic animals. Warning: young children should not keep hedgehogs as pets — or hamsters, baby chicks, lizards and turtles, for that matter — because of risks for disease.


Experts: Half of mammals in decline

The Iberian lynx, with an adult population estimated at no more than 143, is among the mammal species listed by the IUCN as critically endangered. One in two mammal species on Earth are in decline and at least one in four are at risk of disappearing, according to a survey released Monday.
